In Algeria, the first cause of the "worrying” proliferation of cancer is culinary


In Algeria, 20,000 deaths from cancer and 50,000 new cases are recorded each year due to the excessive consumption of fastfoods, says the head of the oncology department at the Pierre and Marie Curie anticancer center in Algiers. He sounds the alarm and calls on the Algerians to change their habits.

The death rate due to cancer in Algeria is taking on an increasingly worrying proportion, says Professor Kamel Bouzid, head of oncology at the Pierre and Marie Curie anti-cancer center in Algiers and president of the National Association of medical oncology, on the sidelines of the closing of the 3rd national days of medical oncology in Skikda, in the east of the country. He insists that 20,000 deaths from cancer and 50,000 new cases are registered each year in the country.

"This figure is worrying and likely to increase," warns Professor Bouzid, according to the news site Horizon Sud. He points out that the largest increase was recorded for colon cancer in women and anus in men.

Evoking the main cause of this meteoric increase in cancer in Algeria, the specialist pointed out the modification of the diet, with an ever-increasing consumption of fastfoods. Poor quality food is believed to be behind the increase in cases of colorectal cancer in women over 40, the most common after breast cancer, and the first cancer in men, long before lung cancer. In addition, M. Bouzid warns against pesticides, the excessive use of which in agriculture is a factor in the proliferation of cancer.

Preventive measures
Faced with this worrying situation, Professor Kamel Bouzid announced that “the pilot studies of early detection of breast cancer in Biskra and colorectal cancer in Bejaia have produced convincing results likely to guide actions in other regions editor's note] ".


As for preventive measures, the specialist recommends playing sports and reducing the consumption of red meat, and recommends a diet based on organic vegetables and fruits . According to a study co-conducted by Algeria and the World Health Organization in 2017, only 14.9% of Algerians take into account  World Health Organization of  advice on food, namely the need to eat three vegetables and two fruits each day.

A new brand-new nuclear medicine service at the Regional Anti-Cancer Center  in the (region) of Ouargla, in southern Algeria, will open before the end of 2019, according to Fadel Sadek , Director of Health and Population of this region, quoted by the Algeria Press Service. Like all the other services of the ACC, it will be managed by an Algerian-Cuban medical team.
